Sage was more then happy when she watched the other girl smile and then let out a soft giggle of her own. It was a pleasant sound, and she had a feeling that it wasn't something that happened often. So she felt some what accomplished. God what would people think of her now? Sitting at a coffee shop, having a chat with an eight year old. Though truth be told she didn't have many options.

She finally just rested her chin on her arms looking across the table at the girl, she expected Alice to get up and make a bolt for the door now that there wasn't anything keeping her glued to her seat. Though when she said she might want a sandwich the next day she just kind of seemed to think for a minute, though her thoughts were interrupted with the question of whether or not she liked sandwiches.

"Are you kidding me? Pretty sure I invented the sandwich."

She gave a bit of a roll of her eyes that said it was really no big deal.

"Though .. if you like sandwiches, this place is okay for em, but there's this deli down the street. I supposed if you happened to just ... come back tomorrow while I was here, I might be so inclined to walk down the street for a sandwich tomorrow. Like. A really big one."

The look from Little Bit was something akin to suspicion and 'don't fuck with me'. "You didn't invent the sandwich." Her brows furrowed but then she had second thoughts. "Did you? How did you do that?" Now she wanted to know because everyone had sandwiches and how did Sage tell everyone?

"Are you rich?"

Surely someone who invented the sandwich would be rich!

She shifted a little in her seat, the idea of coming back to the same spot twice in two days wasn't the best idea according to the girl who drifted constantly to remain hidden. But there was an offer of a sandwich. Maybe she could get Sage to pay for it too. Should be easy if she invented them and was rich.

"Okay. Maybe. Yeah." Tomorrow. She could probably swing that.

She saw the look cross over the kids face, no kid should have a 'don't fuck with me' face, but if she had ever seen a face that was definitely one of them. She followed it with a 'You didn't invent the sandwich' and then she seemed to really ponder on that one for a minute, and then hit her with a rapid fire succession of questions about sandwiches, how she did it, and if she was reaching and Sage was grinning again, shaking her head on a bit of a laugh.

She leaned forward just a bit and looked around the room suspiciously as if someone might be listening on their conversation.

"That's not something I can discuss right here and now .. but maybe tomorrow."

To sweeten the pot, on whether or not the kid would come back tomorrow. Though truth be told Sage already didn't feel right and or comfortable letting the girl out of her sight, but she also didn't think a apple fritter, and shelter from the cops would help the girl feel completely trustful of Sage. And since when did Sage care about what anyone else did? She'd been pretty engulfed in her own world, her own dramas, her own world.

She could keep a secret and understood the need to keep them quiet. You wouldn't get caught if you didn't go around saying things! Her little head bobbed up and down a little to indicate she understood that right now was not a good time to talk about sandwiches.

"All right. Tomorrow then." Hard to say what time the girl would show up but Little Bit made a promise to show up so you know she would.

For another few minutes Little Bit studied Sage and finally blurted out, "What is all this?" She waved her hands then to the stuff that was scattered all over the table.

For some reason Sage suspected that would be the end of their conversation, that the young girl would hop off her chair and head on out, and Sage would have to sit on her damn hands to keep herself from jumping out of her chair and following the kid. So when the kid sit back and then after a few minutes of silence blurted out that question while motioning towards the stuff that she had sprawled out on the table. Sage blinked and looking down almost forgetting why she had been there in the first place.

She kind of pressed her lips together lightly a moment before she pointed to the sketch book with her pen.

"Sketch book. I like to draw, I like to keep drawings in on place..."

And it suddenly occurred to her that some of the depictions in that sketch book would not be okay for an eight year old to see, no matter how mature they seemed so that was begin swept up, shut and tucked away in the bag. Nothing sexual, no, but death. A bit of gore. No. No kid needed to see that, hell Sage didn't need to see that and yet she did.

She pointed towards the other notebook.

"Notes. For this book."

She pointed to the GED study guide.

"I'm in high school, and I don't particularly like it, so I'm trying to take this big test to ... not be in high school anymore. And the lap top is out to help with that."

She didn't want to admit that she just needed to be out, not cooped up, thinking about everything that was going on in her life, so this helped.

She was ready to look at the pictures but that got taken away. Boo! As if the kid hadn't seen gore. Sage had no way of knowing that the girl had seen her own mother killed in front of her when she was only four. That had been the start of hell for her little life.

She looked at the other book and didn't see the sense in it. She was perfectly fine and she hadn't gone through school, right? She shook her head and leaned back. "So don't go." That was her answer. Very simple. But then to the child, things really did seem to be black and white.

When the kid told her not to go she just kind of let out one of those short laughs that said it was wishful thinking, dragging her fingertips lightly over her features for a moment. She'd gotten it stuck in her head the last couple of weeks that there was a small part of her that wanted to become a cop. Just to piss off her father. But then again this was the girl that would do just about anything to piss that man off. And to do that? She needed the GED.

"I could stop going, but ... it'd limited my job options once I became one of those asshole adults."

She said it with a bit of a smirk at the little girl, knowing full and well already that the kid not trust the 'adults' and with every right in the world. No one should trust adults, they were liars, backstabbers, and just about the worst aspects of the world.

"You don't ever wish you could go be bored in a classroom with thirty or so kids your age who are super annoying I'm sure?"

She shrugged because she didn't know what the intricacies of getting a job entailed. So she kept quiet and let Sage go on with her story. But the question about the classroom got a blink and up when those blond brows.

"I only miss the cookies." The last time the girl was in school was preschool and they still had cookies then. "Other than that, no. They make you go live with bad people. I don't need school." She let off a string of something in another language that was probably a curse based on the tone.

Sage rubbed lightly at the back of her head and leaned back into her chair a little more. Talk to a kid about anything and everything, besides what they probably wanted to talk about, don't ask them out right questions about what you were curious about and bit by bit you started to get a picture. She only missed the cookies, and other then that she didn't she didn't need to go to school because they made her life with bad people. She frowned. Listened to the string of words she didn't understand and just shook her head lightly.

"Hm. I don't remember the last time I got cookies..."

She didn't either. She was sure there was a point in her entire academic career when she got cookies, either preschool or kindergarten. had to be one of the two. She tipped back in her chair a moment and then let the legs hit the ground once again before she was folding her arms over the books, and dropping her chin on her arms.

"They weren't that good."

At least that's the story she's sticking to. Say they weren't that good and you don't miss them quite so much. She watched Sage sigh and then mimicked the folding of arms on the table and the dropping of her chin to her arms. Blue eyes peeked over at Sage as if she were trying to be as grown up as Sage by doing what Sage was doing.

Her brows lifted a little as if to ask without words if she was doing it right.
